While it may perennially live in the shadow of the MCG, there is no denying that Marvel Stadium is a world-class facility that would have top billing in most other cities in the world.
Boasting a central location in Melbourne that makes it easy to get to and its state-of-the-art facilities, it is an exceptional venue to watch live sport, concerts and events.
Over the years some incredible moments have happened here. Not least Chris Gayle’s brutal 12-ball fifty in the Big Bash in 2016.
Then, of course, there were the emotional scenes when Jason McCartney ran out on to the field in 2003 after almost dying in the Bali bombings.
And who could forget the highly charged atmosphere of Wayne Carey’s much anticipated return against North Melbourne, after his notorious extramarital scandal that involved the wife of Anthony Stevens, his former teammate.
Whilst it has had several names since it opened at the turn of the century, Marvel Stadium is a major part of Melbourne’s sporting landscape.
But how much do you know about this exceptional stadium?

About the Stadium
Marvel Stadium is a multi-purpose indoor stadium located in the Docklands area of Melbourne.
Previously known as Docklands Stadium and Etihad Stadium, the venue took over 2.5 years to build, officially opening on March 9th 2000 at a cost over $460 million.
The stadium features a unique bowl shape design that facilitates unobstructed views from every seat of the pitch, thus enabling fans to be close to the action.
One of the standout features of the stadium is its retractable roof, which allows for games to be played whatever the weather.
Boasting a capacity of over 53,000 spectators, the stadium is the second-biggest in Melbourne behind the MCG.
What Sports Are Played at Marvel Stadium?
Predominantly the main sports played at Marvel Stadium are Australian Rules Football and Cricket.
The venue currently has deals with the St Kilda, Western Bulldogs, North Melbourne, Essendon and Carlton to play some of their home games there. While in cricket, the Melbourne Renegades have played their home games there since the league’s inception in 2011.
Up until 2021 the Melbourne Victory also played A-League soccer games at the venue, while the Melbourne Storm played some NRL games there too.
One day international cricket matches and rugby union matches have also been held at the stadium, as have Rugby 7s at the 2006 Commonwealth Games. Additionally. international basketball has been played there while WWE and UFC have also drawn huge crowds for major events.
The venue even hosted the Speedway Grand Prix of Australia in 2015 and a notorious darts international event that took place in 2015 when angry spectators threw furniture and chairs at each other.
Other Events
As well as its sporting events, Marvel Stadium hosts as many as 70 arena sports and entertainment events and 600 non-event day functions annually.
It is especially noted as a major concert venue, which over the last 20 years has attracted some of the biggest names in the music industry.
The first major concert of note was performed by Barbara Streisand in 2000, when 70,000 people attended her show as part of her ‘Timeless Tour’.
Since then several other artists have hosted concerts there, including Red Hot Chilli Peppers, KISS, Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band, U2, Bon Jovi, George Michael, Taylor Swift, Eminem, Adele & Coldplay.
Ed Sheran played gigs on four consecutive nights there in 2018, while the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo also hosted three shows at the stadium in 2016.
Aside from concerts, RMIT University uses the venue for its annual graduation ceremonies.
Facilities
Marvel Stadium prides itself on being one of the most technologically advanced, flexible and versatile sporting venues in Australia.
It has a seating capacity of 53,343 and boasts state-of-the-art facilities that enable it to accommodate a wide range of events. One of its most notable features is its retractable roof which allows events to take place in all weather conditions.
Additionally, it also has retractable Level 1 seating, as well as premium seating options, that include VIP suites, club lounges, and private function rooms.
The venue also has a complimentary high density Wi-Fi network, in addition to a high definition and cutting edge IPTV network. Its audio and visual systems are also excellent too, with two large video screens being each goal and two smaller screen on opposite sides of the pitch displaying video replays, scores and adverts.
How to get to the stadium
Marvel Stadium is located in the Docklands area of Melbourne in Victoria. There are several transportation options available to get you there, either by public transport or private vehicles.
By train, you can take the Craigieburn, Upfield, Werribee, Williamstown or Sunbury lines to Southern Cross Station, which is not too far in terms of walking distance from the stadium.
Alternatively, you can take the tram and get off at the Harbour Esplanade tram stop, which is also located within walking distance to the stadium. The free City Circle Tram also stops nearby.
If you prefer to drive, there is ample parking available at the venue, but it is recommended to pre-book your parking spot in advance as it can get quite busy on event days.
For those who prefer to bike, there are several bike racks located around the stadium for you to park your bike. Additionally, plenty of taxis and ride-sharing services are available in the area as well.
Food in ground
Marvel Stadium offers a wide range of food options for sports fans and concert-goers.
Throughout the stadium, there are several food courts offering a variety of cuisine including burgers, hot dogs, pizza, noodles, and salads. There are also a number of kiosks and food outlets that offer everything from coffee and doughnuts to sandwiches and wraps.
For those looking for something a little more substantial, there are a number of restaurants and bars located within the stadium. The Garden Grill is a popular option, offering a range of grilled meats and salads, while The Terrace Bar is a great spot for a pre- or post-game drink. There is also a noodle bar, a Mexican restaurant, and a gourmet burger bar located within its confines.
In addition to the food vendors and restaurants, Marvel Stadium also offers a number of hospitality packages that include food and drinks. These packages are perfect for corporate events or for those looking to enjoy a special occasion with friends or family.
Accommodation near the ground
As it is located in the heart of the city, there are plenty of accommodation options near Marvel Stadium to choose from.

Good pubs to visit
There are several great pubs to visit near Marvel Stadium on match day.
One of the most popular options for sports fans is the Mail Exchange Hotel which is located on Bourke Street. It is known for its lively atmosphere, a terrific range of beers and ciders on tap, and delicious pub food menu.
The North Wharf Roadhouse on Docklands Drive is another very good choice, as it has a relaxed atmosphere, extensive drinks menu, and excellent food options. They include a fantastic range of wood-fired pizzas and gourmet burgers which are among the best in town.
For those looking for something a little more upmarket, the Woolshed Pub offers a sophisticated setting with stunning views of Victoria Harbour. Situated on Harbour Esplanade, it also has a wide selection of beers and a delightful menu of meals to choose from.
Other popular options near Marvel Stadium include The General Assembly, The Wharf Hotel, and The Munich Brauhaus. While inside the stadium, the James Squire Brewhouse offers a range of handcrafted beers and ciders, as well as tasty meals and snacks.
