Visitor Guide to Lord Howe Island

Blessed with a dramatic volcanic landscape and surrounded by stunning waters, Lord Howe is an extraordinary tropical island paradise.

Registered as a UNESCO World Heritage site, the island famously accepts only 400 tourists at a time. So it retains a sense of charm, isolation and timelessness that few other places in Australia can offer.

Given these small numbers, you could be forgiven for believing that there are very few places to stay on Lord Howe Island. But actually, there are quite a few options available to visitors.

Ranging from rustic budget accommodations that don’t even have WI-FI to deluxe suites that are furnished with private hot tubs and other luxury amenities, there are plenty of places on the island to suit all budgets and tastes.

Outlined below is a selection of 8 of the best places to stay on Lord Howe Island. For your convenience, we have split them into two sections: luxury properties and budget accommodation.

Where is Lord Howe Island?

Lord Howe Island is considered to be part of New South Wales. It is roughly 700 km northeast of Sydney and southeast from the Gold Coast, lying around the same latitude as Port Macquarie within the Tasman Sea.

Comprising a crescent shape, which protects a lagoon and coral reef, the island extends for about 11km in length and 2km in width. It is the eroded remains of a shield volcano that is at least seven million years long.

Rising to 875 metres and 777 metres, respectively, Mount Gower and Mount Lidgbird preside imperiously over the island’s south end.

Climate

Lord Howe Island boasts a subtropical climate, which means it has summers that are mild to warm, with regular rain and wetter, mild to cool winters. Rather than being marked, the transition through the seasons is quite gradual.

Temperatures tend to average out at a maximum of 24 – 27 degrees Celsius in the summer and around 17 – 20 degrees Celsius in the winter. The minimum temperatures for these periods range from 18 – 22 degrees celsius and 12 – 15 celsius.

Generally, the humidity hovers around 60 – 70% all year round, though it is much more pronounced during the warmer days of summer, as opposed to the winter. Despite receiving fair high rainfall all year round (the annual median and average is around 1600mm) November to February tend to be

the driest months. For this reason, you might want to time your visit to Lord Howe Island during this time.
